Todos Caerán is a five piece band from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada who formed in 2010. I've really enjoyed watching this band progress and evolve over the past few years, making them one of the most respected and unique bands in the current post hardcore/screamo scene. Since their inception in 2010, Todos Caerán have released a five song self titled cassette on Bart Records in 2010, a split 10" with Bears in 2011, a four way split with Lizards Have Personalities, ¡Silencio, Ahora, Silencio!, and Book Of Caverns in 2011, a split 7" with Gumilinski in 2011, a five song LP entitled After Dark in 2011, a split 10" with Mahria in 2011, a four way split LP with Polina, Bonehouse, and Kadish in early 2013, and a split LP with Tel Fyr in June Of 2013. Todos Caerán play a killer style of screamo tinged post hardcore influenced by bands such as Portraits Of Past, Funeral Diner, City Of Caterpillar, Fugazi, Daitro, Moss Icon, Suis La Lune, Zann, Native Nod, ...Who Calls So Loud, and Fall Of Efrafa. 'Town Of Cats' is the band's latest six song LP, which is set for release via Dog Knights Productions on December 15th, 2013. This latest LP is Todos Caerán's most ambitious release to date. These six songs are a perfect showcase for the band's continued evolution. The biggest change in the band's sound is that they have included an atmospheric, dark, and dynamic post rock element to their sound, which was only hinted at in their previous releases. The end result is six songs of intensely dark and atmospheric screamo tinged post hardcore. Calling this album phenomenal would only be a starting point in describing how good this album is. All I can say is that it's a good thing I haven't begun compiling my best of year end lists yet. Highly recommended!

Before doing this post, let me just say that Dog Knights Productions has been impressing the hell out of me this year. This label is giving Topshelf Records a run for it's money and is quite possibly the European counterpart to that label. Dog Knights Productions has been consistently churning out great music the last few years, but this year is proving to be a milestone year for the label with releases from Nai Harvest, Capacities, Gillian Carter, the Orchid Tribute, and now this killer split LP featuring two amazing Canadian bands. This split LP features new material from Calgary, Alberta's, Tel Fyr and Edmonton's Todos Caerán. The first band on the LP is Tel Fyr. Tel Fyr play a killer style of post-hardcore/post-rock that calls to mind bands like Gifts From Enola or Caravels minus the vocals. On their side of the split, Tel Fyr offer up four songs of tense and atmospheric post-hardcore with post-rock leanings. The second band on the split is Edmonton's Todos Caerán. Regular readers of the blog should be really familiar with this band by now. Todos Caerán went through a ton of lineup changes in 2012 and have refocused their efforts and released four new songs as a result. Todos Caerán offer up four new songs of tense, emotional hardcore, punk, screamo influenced by bands such as City Of Caterpillar, Loma Prieta, and Portraits Of Past. Overall, this is a killer split LP and each band offer up top notch material. Highly recommended! Look for a physical release sometime in June.

The Polina tracks on this four way split offer a slightly different take on screamo/post-hardcore than I’ve been hearing lately. The music under the desperate vocals leans more on the emo side, and it creates a cool contrast. The strained screams are definitely front and center, but are complemented well by the more technical music going on beneath them. Their second song, 'Monroe Is A Hole', speeds things up a bit and adds a bit more straight forward punk/hardcore influence while still maintaining a bit of emo noodling and the desperate vocal approach. Bonehouse is up next, and then mellow things out a bit at the onset of their first offering, 'Gentle Bones'. The vocal approach isn't quite shouted, but isn't quite sung either, and rather exists somewhere in between. The guitars twist and bend around each other, while the drums are technical and light. The second song they give here continues in this same fashion, but adds spoken vocals and escalates into shouted, harmonized group vocals that are the highlight of these two tracks for sure. Kaddish brings the intensity back up to a boiling level, putting screamed vocals over technical guitars and pounding drums. The production on these songs has a great gritty quality to it, and the clean guitars have a nice fat round tone to them while the bass is gritty and holds down the rhythm well. These songs manage to have maximum impact without always being totally heavy or at breakneck pace. The guitars remain clean a good amount of the time, even in heavier, louder passages, which creates a nice dynamic and leaves the emotional weight to the vocals. Todos Caerán is left the task of closing out this split, and they do a bang up job of it. They clearly thought out the way their two songs would be perceived by themselves, and the quieter spoken introduction to 'Perdido Street Station' seems to introduce the band as a whole, building quiet intensity until the screams come in over the still building instruments. When the entire band kicks in, the emotions are front and center, and there’s a subtle melody that carries it all expertly through both songs.
